Tight Lower Bounds for Multiplicative Weights Algorithmic Families

چکیده
We study the fundamental problem of prediction with expert advice and develop regret lower bounds for a large family of algorithms for this problem. We develop simple adversarial primitives, that lend themselves to various combinations leading to sharp lower bounds for many algorithmic families. We use these primitives to show that the classic Multiplicative Weights Algorithm (MWA) has a regret of √ T ln k 2 , there by completely closing the gap between upper and lower bounds. We further show a regret lower bound of 2 3 √ T ln k 2 for a much more general family of algorithms than MWA, where the learning rate can be arbitrarily varied over time, or even picked from arbitrary distributions over time. We also use our primitives to construct adversaries in the geometric horizon setting for MWA to precisely characterize the regret at 0.391 √ δ for the case of 2 experts and a lower bound of 12 √ ln k 2δ for the case of arbitrary number of experts k. ∗Massachusetts Institute of Technology. 32 Vassar St, Cambridge, MA 02139. Sharp Upper bounds for Multiplicative Version of Degree Distance and Multiplicative Version of Gutman Index of Some Products of Graphs
In $1994,$ degree distance of a graph was introduced by Dobrynin, Kochetova and Gutman. And Gutman proposed the Gutman index of a graph in $1994.$ In this paper, we introduce the concepts of multiplicative version of degree distance and the multiplicative version of Gutman index of a graph. We find the sharp upper bound for the multiplicative version of degree distance and multiplicative ver...
متن کاملA new lower bound for the bipartite crossing number with applications
Let G be a connected bipartite graph. We give a short proof, using a variation of Menger's Theorem, for a new lower bound which relates the bipartite crossing number of G, denoted by bcr(G), to the edge connectivity properties of G. The general lower bound implies a weaker version of a very recent result, establishing a bisection based lower bound on bcr(G) which has algorithmic consequences. Mo...

متن کاملTight Lower Bounds for the Multiplicative Weights Algorithm on the Experts Problem
We develop tight lower bounds for the regret achievable by the widely used Multiplicative Weights Algorithm (MWA) on the fundamental problem of prediction with expert advice. It is well known that with k experts and T steps, MWA suffers a (minimax) regret of at most √ T ln k 2 [7]. In this work, we show that as T → ∞, MWA suffers a regret of at least √ T ln k 2 for every even k, thereby precise...
متن کاملOn the Multiplicative Zagreb Indices of Bucket Recursive Trees
Bucket recursive trees are an interesting and natural generalization of ordinary recursive trees and have a connection to mathematical chemistry. In this paper, we give the lower and upper bounds for the moment generating function and moments of the multiplicative Zagreb indices in a randomly chosen bucket recursive tree of size $n$ with maximal bucket size $bgeq1$. Also, we consi...
